Sanctification - Perseverance Lesson 13 The Order of Salvation Sanctification - Perseverance Lesson 13

Singing: Hymn 63:7 Into temptation lead us not, lest we in Satan’s snares be caught. Uphold us by your Spirit’s might; put mortal enemies to flight. May we against our foes contend and be victorious in the end.

The chain of salvation Election Gospel call Inward call Conversion Regeneration Justification Sanctification Glorification

Justification & Sanctification Justify = to declare righteous (without sin) - justification is “pretend” - God acts as if we are sinless Sanctify = to make holy (without sin) - sanctification is “real” - God makes us truly sinless

Confusing  Because both justification and sanctification relate to sin, they are often confused. For example, does the expression “freed from sin” in Romans 6:7 refer to justification or sanctification? Many Christian books fail to understand justification and sanctification properly, confusing the two. That’s why it’s important to read Reformed works on these issues.

For example Having become new creatures at salvation (2Cor. 5:17), believers are no longer servants of sin. The Christian life is the process of bringing one’s lifestyle into line with one’s nature. As believers “present their members as slaves to righteousness,” the inevitable result is further “sanctification.” Decreasing frequency of sin, therefore, is a sure sign of a mature believer. (J. MacArthur, Strength for Today, Oct. 20) Qn: Would you characterize King David’s life as one of “decreasing frequency of sin”?

Perseverance In the life of a believer: The power of sin is broken. The reality of sin is still there. In this life even the holiest have but a small beginning of obedience. Vital to perseverance is prayer: asking God to be with us in all we do.
