Chapter 6 Lesson 2 Colonial Resistance Grows Essential Question: Describe how the colonial resistance grow especially in Boston.

Review Sugar Act and Stamp Act were repealed by the Declaratory Act. The Declaratory Act gives Parliament the right to tax the Colonies when ever they want. Quartering Act is not working because no one will let the troops in to there homes. Parliament still have to pay for troops in America.

Townsend Act The King’s finance minister (Charles Townsend) comes up with the Townsend Act. Townsend Act(1767)- an act on goods like glass, paint, paper, lead, and tea. Meant to pay for the salary of the British governors and other officials. Writ of assistance- search warrants, allows troops to enter your home and search for smuggled goods.

Compare and contrast the Townsend Act to the Sugar and Stamp Act.

Boycott Colonist were upset about the new taxes. Samuel Adams- leader of the Sons of Liberty in Boston. Samuel Adams urged colonists to boycott British goods. Daughters of Liberty urges the women to weave their own clothes and only buy American.

Tense times British troops are hated in the colonies. The troops are not paid well so they get second jobs. Colonists think that they are taking there jobs. British troops try and search a boat called Liberty for smuggled goods, they were smuggling wine. A riot brakes out and the mob forces the custom officers to leave.

Boston Massacre On March 5, 1770 a group of youth and dock workers started yelling at a group soldiers in front of the Custom House. The soldiers opened fire at the group killing 5 people. The first to die was an African American named Crispus Attucks

Imagine you are in Boston at the time of the shooting Imagine you are in Boston at the time of the shooting. How would you react to this picture?

Boston Massacre John Adams- a lawyer and a cousin of Samuel Adams defends the soldiers. He claims self defense and wins the trial.

Boston Tea Party All the taxes are replied after the massacre EXCEPT the tea tax. Samuel Adams wants to make sure the colonist remember the fight for freedom. He starts writing letters called the committees of correspondence. Committees of Correspondence- A group that exchanged letters on colonial affairs with similar groups.

Boston Tea Party In 1773, Parliament passed the Tea Act. Gives permission for only one British Company to sell tea to the colonies. Colonist Protest this act by dressing up as Indians and throwing 342 chests of tea of a British ship on Dec. 16, 1773.
