What is the caste system? What languages are important in India? What kind of government does India have, and what is India’s economy like?

Warm-up: CNN Student News Write a ONE SENTENCE summary on one news story from CNN Student News. Summary: “A brief statement or account of the main points of something. Discussion to follow: What do you think?

Four Major Religions Originated in India: Hinduism — reincarnation; karma; respect for cows Buddhism — Siddhartha Gautama (500s BCE); nirvana Jainsim — all things in nature have souls Sikhism — late 1400s; combines Hinduism and Islam; many men are soldiers

Birth determines position in society. The Caste System: Birth determines position in society. Higher castes cannot even touch lower castes. Dalits do work that higher castes consider unclean. The caste system was officially abolished after independence but remains a strong force. Government is working to improve the economic conditions for the Dalits.

The Important Languages in India: Hindi is the official language and is spoken by 30 percent of the people. There are 24 languages with a million or more speakers. English is common in government, business, and higher education.

India’s Government: Democratic — based on Britain’s parliament; shares power with states; politics marked by violence and assassinations; border disputes with Pakistan over Kashmir

Poor transportation and communication stunt growth. India’s Economy: Sixty percent of the people are farmers; the green revolution encouraged modern farming. Industries include textiles, jewelry, cars, bicycles, oil products, chemicals, food processing, electronics, and moviemaking. Poor transportation and communication stunt growth.
