Vocabulary Chapter 1: Lesson 2 Seismic waves Pressure Crust Basalt Granite Mantle Lithosphere Asthenosphere Outer core Inner core

Seismic wave What an earthquake produces

pressure A mass of rock pressing on an area EX. The deeper down the greater the pressure

Crust The layer of rock that forms Earth’s outer skin; both dry land and ocean floor

Basalt A dark fine grained rock that makes up the ocean floor

Granite A rock that is usually a light in color and has coarse grains which is the most amount of rock that makes up the continental crust

Mantle A layer of hot rock that is divided into layers and nearly 3000 km. thick

lithosphere The crust and the uppermost part of the mantle that is brittle rock.

asthenosphere The soft hot layer under the mantle that is under more pressure that is less rigid than the lithosphere but still solid

Outer core Layer of molten metal surrounding the inner core which is liquid

Inner core A dense ball of solid metal (iron and nickel)
