Just the important things! Narrative Summary Just the important things!

A NARRATIVE SUMMARY IS… A BRIEF STATEMENT OR ACCOUNT OF THE MAIN POINTS OF EVENTS IN THE STORY. THE KEY WORD IS …BRIEF

FOR NARRATIVE SUMMARY, REMEMBER SOMEBODY WANTED BUT SO THEN

Let’s see SWBST in action Overview https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsB73dRuGcE Notes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPy55X-yBo4

RETELLING is different than SUMMARIZING A RETELLING of a story is including great details about the beginning, middle, and end. (The whole story in your own words) SUMMARIZING is shorter and gives only the basic information about the plot. (Think of it like the plot in sentence form.)

PRACTICE – ALL SUMMER IN A DAY SOMEBODY: Margot, a young girl who is brought to the rainy planet Venus by her parents WANTED: to see the sun even if it is just one hour BUT : She is in a class with a bully, Will, that locks her in a closet right before the sun comes out SO: She misses what everyone else sees, the sun. THEN: Margot’s classmates feel guilty and let her out of the closet

We are not done – it needs to be in sentences with In the first sentence we need to state the author, title and if you know it, the genre. We should use formal speech – No “you”, “we” or “I”. Short story titles and poems will have quotation marks “All Summer in a Day” and novels or longer works will be underlined or italized. Reread your information to check for spelling, grammar, and punctuation. A great way to end the summary is to mention the theme.

We could do this simple.. In the short story “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury, a young girl, Margot is brought to the rainy planet Venus by her parents. She wants to see the sun even if it is just one hour, but she is in a class with a bully, Will, that locks her in a closet right before the sun comes out. So, she misses what everyone else sees, the sun. Then Margot’s classmates feel guilty and let her out of the closet. This has the important lesson of learning to speak up for oneself with a bully.

Some may go one step further. In the short story “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury, a young girl, Margot is brought to the rainy planet Venus by her parents. She misses the sun and wants to see it peak out of the constant Venus clouds; if only for one hour. Unfortunately her classmates, led by the bully Will, lock her in a closet during this awaited moment. So Margot misses the important event. Then Margot’s classmates riddled by guilt; lets her out of the closet. This story teaches the importance of standing up for oneself.

BIG FAT REVIEW Summarize is BRIEF, and gives only the plot details and theme. Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then is an organizational strategy to help remember all the important details but it still needs to be in sentence form. The author’s name and title of the book need to be mentioned in the beginning. We leave out fun details even if they are interesting- PLOT ONLY. Write in a formal way. Conclude with the theme or lesson.
