Presentation transcript:

Today we are going to learn how to identify the CAUSE and Effect while reading! ACOS: 3. 4.) Use a wide range of strategies and skills, including retelling information, using context clues, and making inferences to identify main idea, to comprehend third-grade informational and functional reading materials.

Comprehension Focus Skill: Cause and Effect Good readers look for cause-and-effect relationships. The reason the event happens is the cause. What happens is called the effect. Finding these relationships helps readers focus on what happens in the story and why. When I read, I ask myself, “Why did that happen?” “What did that cause?” T215 2

This graphic organizer can help you connect the cause and effect relationships. Read the paragraph on the next slide about bats. Look for the cause-and-effect relationships. T 215 S Practice book pg. 194 3

Bat Habitats Where in the world do bats live? Almost everywhere! Bats like very warm weather. Because of this, many bats live near the equator, where it is warmer than other places. Bats can be found on six continents. Antarctica is the only continent where bats are not found. That is because the weather is very cold. Cause Effect: Bats live near the equator. Cause: The weather is very cold. Effect: ____________ Extra Support WkBk pg. 194 4

Effect: There aren’t many bats on islands. Some islands that are far away from continents do not have many bats. This is because bats cannot fly all the way to the islands from the continents. The United States has more kinds of bats than most other places. This means there may be bats living near you! Cause: Effect: There aren’t many bats on islands. 5

Have you ever been in a competition? What was your special talent? Get ready to listen… Today you will hear a fiction story about a boy who had a chance to use his special talent in an important contest. Have you ever been in a competition? What was your special talent? T216 To identify cause and effect in a story. To understand and identify answers in text. 6

Genre Study: Fables Fables are fiction stories that usually teach a lesson. We already know that fables often are set long ago and far away. They usually teach the reader a lesson. The lesson is usually at the end of the story. Listen for the lesson the story is trying to teach. Listen for cause and effect relationships. T216 7

The Empty Pot By: Demi Vocabulary: An emperor is a man who is the ruler of one or more nations. A successor is the person who is chosen to replace another in a position. To sprout is to grow up quickly. If something was transferred, it was moved from one location to another.

Think about the story… What caused Ping’s seeds not to grow? The seeds had been cooked, so it was impossible for them to grow. How did the other children grow beautiful flowers? They must have used different seeds. What lesson is taught in this fable? It is important to tell the truth, even when it is not easy to do. Did you like the story? Why or why not? T132 9

What is the effect? Why did it happen? Now lets think about some of the cause and effect relationships we heard as we read! What is the effect? Why did it happen? Everyone in the kingdom loved flowers. They planted them everywhere, and the air smelled like perfume. Effect: the air smelled like perfume Cause: the flowers were planted everywhere But the Emperor was very old. He needed to choose a successor to the throne. Effect: he needed to choose a successor to the throne Cause: he was very old When Ping received his seed from the Emperor, he was the happiest child of all. Effect: he was the happiest child of all Cause: he received his seed from the Emperor

In your journal write the cause and effect of the next two sentences. Yesterday it was so cold in the snow, I wore my thickest coat. Cause____________ Effect_____________

I played in the snow until my mom called me inside to eat dinner. Cause___________ Effect____________

Now that you have learned how to identify the cause and effect relationships while reading, you are going to practice a little more. At your desk, you have an activity to do with your partner. When you have completed that, you will do the handout that is under the activity sheet on your own.
