Rarely the free element in nature. Located in the Earths crust. Its main source is cinnabar ore.
Reacts in air at about 350°C to form mercury(II) oxide. Doesn't react with water under normal conditions. Reacts with fluorine, chlorine, bromine, or iodine. Mercury has been found in Egyptian tombs dating to 1500 B.C. Hg is the symbol for Hydrargyrum. Known to the ancient Hindus and Chinese. Sometimes called quicksilver. Very harmful to humans, causing disruption of the nervous system, damage to brain functions, DNA damage and chromosomal damage, allergic reactions, resulting in skin rashes, tiredness and headaches, negative reproductive effects, such as sperm damage, birth defects and miscarriages
