Today’s agenda Mental Math Reminders/calendar Kindness Foldable for motion graphs

Mental Math Students know the expectation – seated, quiet, and ready. Mental Math should be started within about one minute of the “tardy time” NO TALKING during Mental Math Teacher will show/call out the problem long enough to read it through TWICE. Students should write ONLY the answer…not the problem or any calculations Don’t forget to simplify – or include units.

Mental Math 1.) What is 10% of $50.50?

Mental Math 2.) 10x10x10 =

Mental Math 3.) 2+32-17=

Mental Math 4.) $25.00 - $15.75 =

Mental Math 5.) $20.00 BUT there is a 10% off coupon. Actual cost/price =

Mental Math 6.) 150 – 42 – 16 =

Mental Math 7.) 49,100 mm = _____ Dkm

Mental Math 8.) 32.1 dm = _____ m

Mental Math 9.) FREEBIE You do NOT need to write any math, but you must write in “Freebie” to get the credit!

Mental Math 10.) FREEBIE You do NOT need to write any math, but you must write in “Freebie” to get the credit!

How can we describe motion? REVIEW How can we describe motion? Motion can be described by: DISTANCE (length) TIME (min, seconds) SPEED (distance and time) DIRECTION (which way) ACCELERATION (change in motion) Speed up, slow down, change direction VELOCITY…speed and direction

In math terms… Distance Speed = Time REVIEW A “change in position over time” is the same as saying: Distance Speed = Time

D S T Speed = Distance Time Time = Distance Speed REVIEW The magic triangle of magic-ness!! Speed = Distance Time Time = Distance Speed Distance = Speed x Time D S T

Christy’s graph Students discussed using speed data (distance and time) to create a graph – and using the graph to illustrate a story of motion. All classes were given a worksheet telling a story about Christy’s trip to the zoo and should have used the information to create a graph.

Christy Christy wanted to visit the zoo, which is 20 kilometers from her house. To help her get there, her mother drove her to the bus stop 5 kilometers away from home and toward the zoo. The trip took 5 minutes. She had to wait for the bus for 5 minutes. Christy was reading on the bus and missed her stop. She finally got off the bus 10 minutes later at the next stop 1 kilometer past the zoo. It took Christy 15 minutes to walk back to the zoo.

Joey’s graph Joey waited 60 minutes while his family got ready to go to the beach. They jumped in the car and got to the beach 60 kilometers away in 40 minutes. They were at the beach for 40 minutes when it started to rain. They headed for home, driving the first 10 kilometers in 10 minutes. It was raining so hard that they cut their speed in half in order to get home. Homework!!! Create the graph for Joey’s story and have it ready by Monday. Be sure to use a straight edge to create lines. Do NOT just free-hand as it is not accurate.

Leg 3 Leg 2 Leg 5 Leg 4 Leg 1 A. The car stopped for 1 min.

Kindness What does that mean? How does it look? How does it sound?

Your name

Recipient’s name Write out two (or more) sentences of kindness about the card owner. Use the sentence stems (on the board) if you need a little inspiration. Be sincere, genuine, real. Author’s name

Kindness 1. I am impressed by…. Sentence Starters Things to Think About 1. I am impressed by….  How does the student treat other people? 2. I remember when you…. What are some examples of them being kind that you have seen? Have they done something nice or kind for you? 3. I like how you….   Do they do things that seem hard or difficult? Things that impress you? 4. I like the way you…. Is there something about them that stands out? That makes them unique? 5. You are good at…. What specific skills do they have or are they good at?

Motion Foldable Motion Graphs Label the bottom of each flap as shown. Draw / decorate your top flap with the foldable’s title. By John Smith

Motion Foldable 4. Repeat for constant motion, different speeds (draw two lines on the same graph), and acceleration (speeding up and slowing down). 3. For “No motion,” label the graph axes and draw in the line that would result from a STOPPED object. Describe it in words.

No Motion

SLOW MOVEMENT

FAST MOVEMENT

FAST vs. SLOW FAST SLOW

Starting & Stopping

Speeding Up Slowing down

After FOLDABLE If there is time, match the story to the graph. You will be given TWO pages. One (front and back) has graphs. The other page has stories. You will find the story that best matches the graph, cut-and-glue the correct story with its matching graph. Please be sure to put your NAME on it. Don’t forget to clean up the glue, scissors, and paper scraps.
