Pilgrimages In the medieval age

People went to Becket’s shrine to be healed. As you already know, four of the king’s knights took swords and killed the Archbishop of Canterbury- Thomas Becket (1170). People soon heard what had happened and came and tore bits of his clothing and dipped it in blood and took it away. They thought these were holy RELICS After Becket was killed on the alter of his cathedral, he was almost immediately named a saint. The Church believed his body and blood were sacred and had the power to cure. People went to Becket’s shrine to be healed.

So what about the Pilgrimage ? Canterbury Cathedral became a centre for pilgrimages because of Thomas Becket becoming a martyr. Pilgrims thought they could be healed there.

History homework GROUP 1: You are a medieval travel agent and you must design an ADVERT to get pilgrims to go on a pilgrimage to Canterbury. How will they get there? What will they bring? Remember it is the medieval age so no trains, planes or cars! GROUP 2: You are also a medieval travel agent but you are designing a BROCHURE to get pilgrims to go on a pilgrimage to Canterbury. GROUP 3: You are also a medieval travel agent and are designing a PERSUASIVE PRESENTATION to get pilgrims to go on a pilgrimage to Canterbury. This could be a speech with or without a powerpoint. ALL GROUPS WILL NEED TO RESEARCH ABOUT PILGRIMAGES IN ORDER TO PRODUCE THE HOMEWORK.
