Friday January 30, 2009 Agenda Welcome to Film Club’s First Viewing Pre-Discussion [3:40-3:50 pm] Watch Film [3:50– 5:50 pm] Post-Discussion Wrap-up [5:50-6:00 pm]
Before We Get Started Is film club for you? TODAY WE FIND OUT. Each officer will select a movie for their month. That movie must be G, PG, or PG-13 (with special permission) You must make a Powerpoint/presentation of some sort that has a pre-viewing and a post-viewing discussion. Movie IS NOT THE SAME THING AS A film. Cannot be made in the past 5 years. Next time: send out list of people to bring snacks/drinks?
Pre-Viewing Discussion Citizen Kane (1941) A.F.I. = #1 FILM OF ALL TIME About a wealthy newspaper owner who dies—his last word is “Rosebud.” The movie attempts to solve the mystery of what the last word means. “Kubla Khan” poem is central to this film.
Pre-Viewing Discussion Kubla Khan In Xanadu did Kubla Khan A stately pleasure-dome decree: Where Alph, the sacred river, ran Through caverns measureless to man Down to a sunless sea. Citizen Kane Xanadu is Kane’s home; he built it for a lot of money.
Citizen Kane Filming Stuff YOU SHOULD KNOW Long shot: full subject, surrounding scene Medium shot: waist-up Close up: face or body part Low angle: subject is shot from below High angle: subject shot from above Dutch angle: subject is shot tiled to one side Soft focus: object is out of focus Deep focus: background and object are in equal focus Rack focus: shifts focus back and forth between objects.
Angles Low (from Citizen Kane)—position of power or importance
Angles High—position of little power or importance; adults talking to children are often represented in this way
Angles Dutch (from Battlefield Earth)—warped sense of right or what is important
Pre-Viewing Discussion Questions to ask yourself: What are the angles and lighting telling me about these characters? What is ROSEBUD? Is this really a movie made in the 1940’s? To me, feels more like a 70’s movie, minus the drugs.
Post-Viewing What did you think of the movie—be honest! Are you disappointed with what ROSEBUD turned out to be? Did it seem like a 40’s film to you? What DIDN’T you like about the film? Suggestions for next viewing? To be made by the Secretary, Donna (2/27)
