Presentation transcript:

In 1119, in Jerusalem, Hugh de Payen and eight other knights came with the idea of creating an order of military monks with the goal of protecting the Christian pilgrims travelling to the Holy City. The Order of the Poor Knights of Christ and the Temple of Solomon would become known as the Templar and grow to be the most powerful military and economic organization of Middle Age world. It all started 900 years ago…

Portugal would soon become one of the most important places in Templar universe. The order played a relevant role in the conquest of Portuguese territory from the Moors, helping to establish the oldest national borders in European countries. There are several very interesting Templar monuments in Portugal, especially in the region of Tomar. That is why the city of Tomar was an obvious choice to receive an event which will be much more than a Fencing competition!

Located just 150 km away from Lisbon international airport, Tomar can be reached in 1h30m by highway. Apart from its unforgettable monuments, Tomar is just 40 km away from Fatima, one of the better known and more reverenced sanctuaries of the Virgin Mary cult in the world. In a couple of hours the visitors of Tomar can visit Fatima and experience the place where in 1917 the Virgin Mary spoke to three children.

Those more interested in the Templar Knights won’t need to travel that far to discover the wonders of the Portuguese region of Ribatejo. In the centre of Tomar one can find the castle and the Convent of Christ, with its magnificent “Charola”. This was the place where the Templar Knights were able to reborn under a new name. King Dennis created the Order of Christ after the excommunication of the Templars and the Templar city of Tomar became the headquarters of the new Order.

Also near the city centre we can find the church of Santa Maria do Olival, one of the most important Templar monuments in the world. Built in 1160 by Gualdim Pais, Master of the Templar Knights, it still has secrets and coded leads to reveal to the most attentive visitors. It’s like an open book on Templar history!

1st Temple Tournament Epee M/F Veterans Tomar – Portugal June 13th/16th 2019 An ancient local legend known only by the oldest inhabitants of Tomar says that the Holy Grail was brought here by Gualdim Pais after crusading in the Holy Land and it’s hidden somewhere below the church of Santa Maria do Olival!

With the Almourol Castle we saved the best for last. 1st Temple Tournament Epee M/F Veterans Tomar – Portugal June 13th/16th 2019 With the Almourol Castle we saved the best for last. Rebuilt by Gualdim Pais, this castle makes us feel as if we were in a fairytale. Placed on an island in Tagus river, it’s almost too beautiful to be true!
