JUICY GOSSIP

Pssst! Hey, you! You wanna hear a juicy gossip? My friend Sandra told me that Lucy was dating with Thomas. Can you change it into direct speech? Sandra said «Lucy is dating with Thomas.»

Another gossip? Here it comes Another friend of mine told me that Jason was in love with Helen and he wanted to marry her. A friend of mine told «Jason is in love and he wants to marry her.» Also, Karen said that she would meet her boyfriend the next day. Karen said «I will meet my boyfriend tomorrow.»

Why do we change the time words? If we report something around the same time, then we probably do not need to make any changes to time words. But if we report something at a different time, we need to change time words.

OK, but what about the question statements?

How do we change the questions in reported speech? Yes/no questions Questions with a question word “Do you like working in teams?” “What time does the train leave?”  He asked if I liked working in teams. He asked what time the train left. Be careful with the tense! Be careful with the tense! Be careful with the word order! Be careful with the word order! Use if instead of the auxiliary verb! Use the question word in reported speech.

Let’s try changing those questions into reported speech: «Where does Peter live?» asked Tony. Tony asked where Peter lived. «Why is she crying?» asked my mum. My mum asked why she was crying. «Is it raining?» she asked. She asked if it was raining. «Can you type?» my boss asked. My boss asked if I could type.
