Figure 1 Temporal Regulation of Proneural Protein Activity Proneural bHLH proteins are expressed at low levels in proneural clusters. Protein levels increase in one specified neural precursor, while being repressed in neighboring cells. Quan et al. show that, at the peak of expression, proneural proteins are phosphorylated, which prevents DNA binding.
