IPFW General Education (GenEd) Applies to all IPFW degrees Generally, the courses you take for GenEd will work for any degree, although there are some exceptions in which particular degrees require particular GenEd courses of their majors For GenEd credit, specific courses must have been approved by the GenEd Committee, and must meet certain requirements to be offered for GenEd credit Can find the list in the bulletin at http://bulletin.ipfw.edu/content.php?catoid=27&navoid=689

Baccaleaureate Framework It is assumed that GenEd, as well as other courses, will lead to the development of skills in six areas. Acquisition of Knowledge Application of Knowledge Personal and Professional Values Sense of Community Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Communication These are developed in more detail on the Academic Plan assignment

Area I: Linguistic and Numerical Foundations: English Composition English Composition: ENG W 129 and ENG W131 Or, just ENG W131 Or, ENG W140 (honors composition) – ENG W131 + ENG W233 (W233 is a College of Arts and Sciences – COAS – requirement)

Area I: Communication COM 11400

Area I: Quantitative Reasoning (Math) MATH 10900 and MATH 11300 (no credit) STAT 12500 (P: MA 10900, or placement higher) MATH 15300 (P: MA 11300, or placement higher) MATH 16800 (P: MA 11300, or placement higher) What’s the difference, and why one or the other? If you place higher than MATH 15300, no Math is required for an IPFW Psychology major, but we recommend more for grad school bound students

Area I: Computer Literacy This is a requirement that departments can specify how it’s achieved in their majors. Psychology says it’s achieved with PSY 203 (Research Methods)

Area II: Natural and Physical Sciences (6 credits) You have to pick two courses from the approved list Sometimes exceptions are made One (but not both) of the courses needs to have a lab – this is also a COAS requirement Bioanthropology (the only Anthropology course in this category), has no lab, but is a popular course for Psychology majors as the second Area II course

Area III: The Individual, Culture, & Society (PSY 120 + 3 credits) For Psychology majors, the first course in this area is PSY 120 This is the only course in the major that counts as a specific course in any GenEd area The other course has to be on the list, and in a different discipline than psychology

Area IV: Humanistic Thought (6 credits) Any two approved courses count here Popular courses in this area are the Philosophy courses (there are several) And the Music courses (e.g., the History of Rock and Roll; Music for the Listener)

Area V: Creative and Artistic Expression (3 credits) One approved course from this list is all that’s needed A very popular course in this area for Psychology majors is Music L153: Introduction to Music Therapy But there are many others Be careful of the two-credit courses, because you need three credits

Area VI: Inquiry & Analysis (3 credits) Any one approved course, not in the major – that is, for psychology majors this cannot be a psychology course BIOL 31700 cannot be used for Psychology majors Must be taken at IPFW – cannot be transferred in.
