Definitions

Definitions Frequency Distribution - partitions data into classes or intervals and shows how many data values are in each class. The Classes or intervals are constructed so that each data value falls into exactly one class Frequency table - Displays each data class along with the number (frequency) of data in that class. Other items such as the midpoint of each class may be included as well.

Definitions Lower class limit - The lowest data value that can fit in a class. Upper class limit - The highest data value that can fit in a class Class Width - the difference between the lower class limit of one class and the lower class limit of the next class

Desired number of classes Definitions Class Width - Largest data value - smallest data value Desired number of classes Increase the computed value to the next highest whole number Questions 1-6

Definitions Class Frequency - the number of tally marks corresponding to that class Class midpoint/ Class mark - The center of each class Lower class limit + upper class limit 2 Questions 1-6

Definitions Class Boundaries Upper class boundaries - add 0.5 unit to the upper class limits Lower class boundaries - Subtract 0.5 unit from the lower class limits Cards

Definitions Relative Frequency - f = Class frequency n Total of all frequencies Relative frequency table Cards

Definitions Mound-shaped symmetrical - This term refers to a histogram in which both sides are (more or less) the same when the graph is folded vertically down the middle Uniform or rectangular - These terms refer to a histogram in which every class has equal frequency. From one point of view, a uniform distribution is symmetrical with the added property that the bars are the same height Cards

Definitions/ Pitfalls of Surveying Skewed left or skewed right - These terms refer to a histogram in which one tail is stretched out longer than the other. The direction of skewness is on the side of the longer tail. So if the longer tail is on the left, we say the histogram is skewed to the left Cards

Definitions/ Pitfalls of Surveying Bimodal - This term refers to a histogram in which the two classes with the largest frequencies are separated by at least one class. The top two frequencies of these classes may have slightly different values. This type of situation sometimes indicates that we are sampling from two different populations. Cards

Definitions/ Pitfalls of Surveying Outliers - are data values that are very different from other measurements in the data set Cumulative frequency - The sum of the frequencies for that class and all previous classes Ogive - A graph that displays cumulative frequencies Cards
