Massive Blood Transfusion Policy Key Components

Who Can Activate The Policy? Emergency Physician Surgeon Attending Physician Anesthesiologist The policy will be activated by written or verbal order.

Nursing Considerations Helpful reminder to physicians Upon administering the 3rd unit of packed red blood cells (PRBC’s) notify physician. Suggest activating the Massive Blood Transfusion Policy.

Nursing Responsibility RN to notify Blood Bank at ext: 36314 for the following: Activation of Massive Blood Transfusion Termination of Massive Blood Transfusion Down-grade to normal transfusion status RN will assign a designated employee to retrieved blood products

Nursing Reminder Factor VIIa must be ordered and obtained for the pharmacy. All unused blood and/or blood products should be returned immediately to Blood Bank.
