Think of your day since you woke up this morning Think of your day since you woke up this morning. How has government influenced your life? For example, how did you get to school? If you walked or rode a bike, you came on streets or sidewalks maintained by the government. If you rode a school bus, it is likely that it is paid for by the government. If you rode in a car, federal guidelines specify safety features and environmental specifications for cars.

Johnson Declares War on Poverty “Unfortunately, many Americans live on the outskirts of hope…Our task is to help replace their despair with opportunity.” “This administration today, here and now, declares unconditional war on poverty in America. I urge this Congress and all Americans to join with me in that effort.” “Our chief weapons in a pinpointed attack will be better school, and better health, and better homes, and better training, and better job opportunities to help more Americans” “Our aim is not only to relieve the symptom of poverty, but to cure it and, above all, to prevent it.”

What was the Great Society? Use the readings to complete the chart that covers Great Society programs LBJ introduced during his presidency. Once you have finished your chart on the back you need to answer these four questions: What was the debate over the Great Society? Liberal viewpoint? Conservative viewpoint? How did the Great Society create economic opportunity and what have been the consequences? What role should the government play in our lives? What has been the lasting impact of the Great Society?

Community Re-Investment Act (write on back of Great Society Chart ) Passed by Congress during Jimmy Carter’s presidency. Continuation of President Johnson’s Great Society programs Reduce discriminatory credit practices against low-income neighborhoods
