Congress

Introducing the Driving Question How does the government work together to make laws? To what extent is Congress designed to make laws that reflect the will of the people? Please take the next 5-6 minutes to explain briefly how you think the government works together to make laws.

Introducing the Culminating Challenge Mission Preview House of Representatives Floor Debate Take the role of a representative. Work in committees to mark up, debate, and pass legislation. Try to advance your ideas in a floor debate.

Introducing the Culminating Challenge A Little More Detail You will be a representative in the House of Representatives. Your biggest concern is your constituents (voters) from your home district, who have the power to reelect you (or not). You may form caucuses with like-minded representatives!

Introducing the Culminating Challenge House Leadership Taking a leadership role will be very advantageous to your political strategy, if you do a good job. Each committee will have a committee chair who represents the party in power. You can run for these offices: 1. Speaker of the House (must be from the majority party!) 2. committee chairs (must be from the majority party!)

Introducing the Culminating Challenge Other Details You will write the legislation, either individually or with a partner. You will defend your actions in a final “letter home.”

Developing Subject Matter Expertise Mastering Topics and Tools to Accomplish the Mission in the Culminating Challenge and Do Well on the AP Test textbook readings chapters on Congress and policy making class activities and lectures individual and team tasks
