LINE Line: An element of art which is used to define space, contours and outlines, or suggest mass and volume. It may be a continuous mark made on a surface with a pointed tool or implied by the edge of shapes and forms. – This is one of many definitions for line.
Many things can be used to make a line.
Descriptive Lines Descriptive lines are lines that are visible, or able to be seen. There are many types of these lines. Here are a few……..
Outline The line that surrounds a shape. Cartoons are a good example of this. They are FLAT, with not much depth.
Contour Line Contour line also defines the outer edges, however, they vary more in thickness and darkness of the line. It also finds the lines within the form. There is more detail and dimension. It is more interesting and descriptive. Blind contour drawing is a form of contour drawing – you do not look at your paper while drawing – just your subject.

Individual Line These are lines used in our alphabet (Calligraphy), and in many types of writing.
Hatching and Crosshatching Hatching is many thin, closely spaced, parallel lines. (not intersecting!) CROSSHATHING is when lines cross or overlap each other to form shadow. Both of these are a technique for SHADING.

Implied Line Implies line is line that is indicated indirectly. It is suggested, or implied, by edges, closure, or lines of sight.
Closure Closure connects marks, where there are not any, to create shapes or closure. One mark leads to another, so we connect the two to create a form.
Expressive Lines We, the viewer, can create a feeling or emotion about an artwork by the type of lines suggested. We automatically begin to think of adjectives of how the lines are making us feel.
Abstract Line Abstract art can be nonrepresentational or nonobjective. These lines are used to express, not to describe.
Espressive Lines All lines have personality. We associate certain feelings by a line’s shape, movement, and direction Horizontal Diagonal Straight Curved Jagged Vertical
