Combining Like terms

+ = Combining Like terms Combining Like terms is like grouping similar objects. x x x x x x x x + = x x x x x x x x x x = 9x 4x + 5x To combine like terms that have variables, add or subtract the numerical coefficients.

7x + x = 8x Combining Like terms Definition:- Example 1: Add 7x and x You can add Like terms together to make one term. Example 1: Add 7x and x Solution: Like terms 7x + x = 8x

-8x2y + 6x2y = -2x2y Example 2: Add -8x2y and 6x2y Solution: Like terms -8x2y + 6x2y = -2x2y By Integer rule, when both signs are different then subtract and put bigger number sign.

Example 3: Add 6a + 3 and 4a + 2. 6a + 3 + 4a +2 = (6a + 4a) + 3 +2 Solution: Like terms 6a + 3 + 4a +2 Like terms = (6a + 4a) + 3 +2 Combining Like terms = 10a + 5

Subtracting Like terms Example 1: Subtract 6t – 4t . Solution: Like terms 6t - 4t = 6t – 4t = 2t

Example 2: Subtract -8p2q from 12p2q Solution: Like terms 12p2q - (-8p2q) = 12p2q + 8p2q By Multiplication rule of integers, - x - = + = 20 p2q

Try these 1. Add 4m+8 and 6m+7 2. Subtract 12m2n from -15m2n 3. Subtract 12m – 5m .
