The Fall of the Roman Empire Some Reasons Why the Mighty Romans Lost it All

Weak Government After the murder of Commodus in A.D. 192, a long period of instability followed. At one point, Rome had 22 different rulers over 50 years.

Famine and Hunger The Roman army began to take food from farmers. Because of this, the farmers did not grow as much food, and people began to go hungry and get sick.

A Bad Economy The Roman government began to mix less-expensive metals in their money. The money was not worth as much, which caused inflation. People also began to barter instead of using money.

The Empire is Divided Diocletian tried to make reforms, but the people ignored his ideas. He decided to divide the Empire into four parts, hoping that it would make it easier to control.

The Eastern Roman Empire In the east, the city of Constantinople becomes the capital. This empire is strong and lasts for another 1000 years.

The Western Roman Empire In the west, Rome was attacked over and over again by European tribes. The city of Rome was conquered in 476, and within a few years, the Roman Empire was gone.
