I&A interprets what it should mean for the BBC. FoI, DPA Top level Archival drivers – a working archive for the BBC and supporting its activities

Archiving the BBC Photograph Library – 6 million Sound Archive – 1 million assets Television Archive 1.4 million assets Written Archives – 10 km (6.22 miles) Web – Legacy and evolving collections Nations, Sports, NHU Bristol, Regional collections Music Library – 0.6 km, inc 102,000 ms scores Gramophone Library – 2 million recordings Libraries and Archives – like most, the BBC doesn’t really know the difference Photos – Negatives, transparencies, prints, of which 900,000 are digital holdings via the BBC in-house system ELVIS. Most BBC, some indies and WW Sound – programmes, but many extracts, field recordings etc. early years a ‘library’ of sounds rather than a programme archive. Intake fully digital/file-based (only) since 2008. TV - early days as with Sound not recorded at all. Never attempted to be comprehensive. Regulatory (Compliance Recording) is separate and non=broadcast quality Written Archives – inc 100,000 contributor files. Rich source. Programme files, scripts, policy, audience research, personnel. Savile. Web – Legacy and evolving collections Nations, Sports, NHU Bristol, Regional collections Music Library – 0.6 km, inc 102,000 ms scores (and non BBC IP) Gramophone Library – 2 million recordings non-BBC IPR
