Unit 3 - Analysis of Facts, Museum Project and Plaque What do you need to do after you have completed your research? LT – I will organize my research to prove my understanding of my topic and how it is important for understanding a World war SC – I will know I have hit the lt when I can write a thesis and rough draft about the research I completed on my topic and its importance to a world war **Rough draft due – Monday, 1/28 Pd. 5 and 7, Tuesday, 1/29 Pd. 4 and 8

Museum Exhibit – Needs a title, a brief summary of the event and 4 key CD’s!! What can it be? 1. Diarama – Mock-up – Drawings - Create a 3-D representation of your topic and its details. 2. Live Action - Dress Up and Act Like Someone from your Topic – become a part of your topic - You will need to have items to show the people who talk to you – you will need to be able to explain your topic in about 2 minutes 3. Combination of the three above – you can combine parts of the three options above for your exhibit. 4. I would like you to make a rough draft/sketch/plan for your exhibit and show it to Mr. Q, Mr. Marshall or Mr. Reynolds or Ms. Buckner. Make sure to include details from your research! C15 – Structures Information in Appropriate Format Exhibit *Exhibit is highly organized, precise and has at least 4 highly detailed and clearly marked CD's from the research. *Exhibit includes color. *Exhibit shows consistent signs of sincere care and effort. *Exhibit is organized and has at least 4 accurate and marked CD's from the research. *Exhibit includes some color. *Exhibit shows some signs of care and effort. *Exhibit is somewhat organized with 4 marked CD's from research. *Exhibit includes 4 marked CD's from research. *Exhibit includes little or no color. *Exhibit shows few signs of care and effort. 2 – Exhibit seem disorganized, has some CD's but they are not clearly marked. No color. Exhibit is sloppy or partially complete.   1 – Not enough work completed to be assessed.

Plaque – the following slides give examples and instructions for your plaque. Your plaque is an essay which answers the following question: How is your topic important for understanding WW1 or WW2? Structure A. Thesis Answers the Question – hints at topics of body paragraphs Two to Three Body Paragraphs – 1. Topic Sentence (hint at CD’s) 2. CD/CM/CD/CM or CD/CD/CM/CM 3. OFCD/OFMC if possible 3. Conclusion/Transition Sentence C. Conclusion Paragraph

Selecting and Organizing Facts from your research – process to follow: Step 1 – Review your notes – highlight the most important CD’s/facts that help explain how your topic relates to and is important for understanding your War. Step 2 –Categorize your facts based (can be categorized based on Causes, Consequences, Changes, ASPIRE topics or other related categories) – highlight or mark CD’s based on the category. These categories will become the topics of your body paragraphs Step 3 – Type or cut and paste the CD’s into your outline/draft template. Step 4 – Choose the two or three categories that you have at least two or three facts/CD’s to support – these will be the topics of your body paragraphs. Step 5 – Write your thesis Step 6 – Draft your body paragraphs (TS’s, CD’s and CM’s). Then go back and finish your introduction. Step 7 – Peer Edit Step 8 – Finish final draft – needs to be typed.

Plaque Examples – Thesis and Topic Sentences Question: How is the Battle of QUIZVILLE important for understanding World War 2? Thesis – answer the question and hint at the topics of the body paragraphs” The Battle of QUIZVILLE is important for understanding World War 2 because IT CAUSED SOCIAL MAYHEM and ITS POLITICAL CONSEQUENCES DESTROYED THE GOVERNMENT. (the first blank will be the topic of the first body paragraph and the second blank will be the topic of the second body paragraph). Topic Sentence/CD/CM Example (only examples of first CD/CM) The social mayhem created in QUIZLOT led to families fighting and people schools closing down. (notice how I mentioned the two cd’s that would be in the body paragraph – families fighting and schools closing). CD – The Battle of Quizville caused many families to fight and led to splits in the community. CM – The Battle of Quizville was important for understanding the war because the social problems caused by families not being able to stay strong led to the weakening of the family and community spirit in QUIZLOT. Consequentially, it was difficult to inspire the army, which led to losing battles and the war.

CD and Commentary Sentence Model CD – Write your sentence with as many details as possible. Remember, the most detailed and precise your CD is, the better your knowledge is. CM Sentence _________________ is important for understanding WW1/WW2 (choose your war) because _________________________________________. You want to try to connect your CM sentences to ASPIRE or to the 3 C’s (cause, change or consequence. On the next slide I have an example of an 8 and a 2/3.

How to analyze? Connect to the 4 C’s, ASPIRE or other academic ideas. Example – Level 8 Fact from Research *Over 500,000 German soldiers died in the battle of the Somme. Analysis or Commentary about that fact *When Germany lost 500, 000 soldiers, it was important for understanding WW1 because of the social and political consequences on Germany’s ability to fight and win the war, which were: 1)It caused the German people at home to lose confidence in Germany’s government, and 2) The German army did not have the man power to make strong military moves and which, as a consequence, weakened the political power to negotiate with the French and British. *Notice how I included ASPIRE topics (social and political) and 2 of the 4 C’s (cause and consequence). Example – Level 2/3 – most likely a 2 When Germany lost a bunch of soldiers in the battle, it made it harder for Germany to win the war. *No specifics, no ASPIRE, no mention of 3 C’s.

NEXT STEP – Plan, Organize and Write your rough draft. 1. Read your notes – pick the best 6 to 10 facts/CD’s that help show how your topic is important for understanding your War. 2. Highlight or mark those facts. Then try to categorize your facts – Are they all causes, or consequences? Are they political, social, economic? How are they related? Connect the CD’s that are related into groups and then use them in body paragraphs. If you can categorize your facts, then that topic can be the topic of your body paragraphs – you need to CD’s per body paragraph. 3. Then read your analysis/CM section of your notes – check to see if you already analyzed why those facts are important. If you have already analyzed them, good. If you have not, then you need to think about how those facts are important for understanding the War. 4. Start writing your rough draft. Start by writing a thesis – include your main topics (see #2 above). 5. Then write your two/three body paragraphs – Topic Sentences, CD’s, CM’s and CS’s.

Funnel Introduction Model Without necessary food, water and other resources, humans would never have been able to survive.  Making sure that there are enough resources for humans to thrive has been an important part of developing storage and saving strategies for success. (Broad/General Sentences) These same ideas are important when it comes to warfare, especially the idea of rationing, which means using and apportioning resources, like food, water, fuel and metals. (Support/Focus/Transition to Specific Thesis) The most important rationed resources during the war were petroleum based products, food and metals.  All of these were important because they directly supported the troops war efforts, helped to develop economic sustainability, and created social and political support for the troops at home. (THESIS)
