Tool Mark Any impression, scratch, or abrasion made when contact occurs between a tool and an object
Tool Mark Impressions – 3 Categories Indention Marks – marks or impressions made by a tool when pressed against a softer surface. (ex. Crowbar, screwdriver, chisel, hanner)
Tool Mark Impressions – 3 Categories Abrasion Marks – made when surfaces slide across one another. The harder surface leaves scratch marks on the softer surface (ex. Pliers, knives, axes, or gun barrels)
Tool Mark Impressions – 3 Categories Cutting Marks – produced along the edge as a surface is cut. (Ex. Saws, wire cutters, bolt cutters) Cutting marks on bones – the type of saw used to dismember a body can be determined by examining the cut surface of the bone
