After the Great War Germany is stripped of military dominance after the war. A fragile provisional government takes over and slowly rebuilds Germany. League of Nations created to maintain world peace

No authority to enforce decisions Established Mandate System Britain and France divide Ottoman Empire Iraq, Jordan, Palestine, Syria and Lebanon Led to future conflict in Middle East (M/E)

Hyperinflation and Depression Germany prints money to pay reparations American Stock Market crash causes worldwide Depression Unemployment is nearly 30% when Hitler takes power.

Hyperinflation 1919: 4 to 1 1922: 500 to 1 1923: 18,000 to 1 January 350,000 to 1 July 5,000,000 to 1 August

Hitler Rises to Power Legally named Chancellor in 1932. He becomes President and Chancellor in 1933, and Germany approves. Hitler abolishes all other parties except Nazism. Sets fire to government building and blames it on communists.
