Dreams and Destinies: The Joseph Story

God gives us dreams A life goal to pursue A person you want to be A destiny to receive

Joseph’s Dreams Gen 37.7 Behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and stood upright. And behold, your sheaves gathered around it and bowed down to my sheaf.

He mistakenly thinks his brothers (who already hate him) will appreciate God’s word to him. Don’t reveal dreams or words to others that are unable to appreciate them. Matt. 7.6 Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you

We will experience opposition to the dream

Joseph is sold into slavery Jacob sends Joseph to report on his brothers. Seeing him coming they plan to kill him. The brothers follow Judah’s advice and sell him to a company of Ishmaelite merchants for twenty pieces of silver who carry him into Egypt.

What do you do when those around you try to destroy your dreams through jealousy and hatred?

Joseph’s life is not controlled by the actions of his brothers. In each case God was with him. Acts 7.9-10 9And the patriarchs, jealous of Joseph, sold him into Egypt; but God was with him . 10and rescued him out of all his afflictions and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who made him ruler over Egypt and over all his household.

God has a plan that takes into account the evil of others. Gen 50.20 As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.

The word of God on our lives will be tested – and this is God’s will Ps 105.19 until what he had said came to pass, the word of the LORD tested him. Heb 12.11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

The word from God brings faith in our lives Rom 10.17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

God Fulfills Dreams His Way

When God fulfills the dream it will be different than we imagined. Joseph leaves prison to become the second ruler in all Egypt. The brothers come before Joseph. He recognizes them but they don’t recognize him. Joseph realizes that the dreams God gave him have now come to pass.

When God fulfills the dream it will be different than we imagined. The fulfillment of the dreams does not mean all the questions are answered. His brothers bow before him, but not as he imagined.

God can give us understanding of His purpose if we keep the dream alive but we need the following: God’s presence. Favour of God. Rewards will come in God’s time. In suffering keep walking and trusting God. Gen 46.5 And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life
