(Blowing up Parliament!) ~end of film~ (Blowing up Parliament!)

Well here it is: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-gHVGOoE48

First up: Music! 1812 Overture plays throughout the scene woowwwwww That music is featured throughout the film so it’s pretty important yeah The 1812 Overture is also quite heavy and bassy in this scene to show how intense and dramatic it is Fun fact: the 1812 Overture was written about Guy Fawkes, which also features heavily in the film Also the 1812 Overture had cannons being fired in the original which is pretty cool (In this one it was replaced by fireworks and stuff)

Next: camera shots! At the start, there is a wide shot to show all of V’s supporters wearing their masks and storming towards the military people After that little bit there’s a mid shot of V’s dead body, covered in Scarlet Carsons This shot pans up to Evey looking over V and contemplating whether to blow up parliament or not (spoilers: she does) We are then shown the last domino, which further suggests that it represents her and her choice. The next important shot is a close up of the head military guy who is asking if they can shoot or not. It’s a close up so we can see the fear on his face because the revolution is pretty intense.

The shot cuts back and forth from Evey and Finch to the revolution There is a bird’s eye view shot of the V’s supporters clashing with the soldiers and walking through them. From this we can get a real idea of just how huge the revolution is. Our next close up is of the military commander guy’s face, which is kind of in shock. We see why this is when the camera pans around to show that there are V masks in all directions. Then we have another birds eye view shot (but wider than last time) which shows the entirety of the place filled with protesters. The very next shot after that is of the Big Ben’s face. It is a few seconds from midnight, and therefore a few seconds before parliament is due to blow up. tHE CLOCK STRIKES MIDNIGHT!!11!!1!

Over-the-shoulder two show of Evey and Finch standing side by side as the train doors close. They are all in this together now. Shots of the outdoor speakers blasting the 1812 Overture, but the streets are all empty. Can you guess why? THAT’S RIGHT. Everyone is in V masks, revolting against the government. Next we have a panning shot of the V army, who are all looking up, waiting for parliament to explode. They’re also all in this together. Mid shot of V’s dead body, the camera is shaking slightly because he’s in the train. We see a little bit of the explosion but then the shot cuts to parliament blowing up. Wide shot plus a lot of panning shots so we can see the full awesomeness of the explosion. Evey and Finch are on the roof of V’s house as they watch the fireworks together. There is a two shot over their shoulders, and then of them facing the camera.

Panning shots of everyone removing their masks because the revolution is now over and they’ve won yay. More fireworks to show how big this is and of course the V shaped fireworks

Symbolism is also pretty important! Everyone in the V masks are reflecting Evey’s quote from the end “He was all of us” The last domino represents Evey because it was the last one standing and she has to make the decision to blow up parliament and send the message. When the train starts moving, we can probably assume the domino falls over, because Evey has made her choice. When Finch decides to let Evey pull the lever, that symbolises how even though he is part of the police, that doesn’t necessarily mean he is on the government’s side. They then walk out together, because they were united in the revolution.

“Unity through faith” was part of the government’s motto, but now it means something totally different: Everyone in London has been united because they all believe they can change things. V literally went out with a bang lol When Big Ben blows up, it symbolises that it’s the end of an era. All the people that are really dead (i.e. Valerie, Gordon, little girl, Evey’s parents, etc.) are seen in the crowd of V supporters, meaning that they are there in spirit. When the soldiers are ordered to stand down, it’s kind of like the government has surrendered.

So are motifs! Scarlet Carsons are shown throughout the film (Ruth growing them, V leaving them with his victims, you get the gist) and now V is decorated by them. Guy Fawkes masks!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everyone’s wearing them because they are a ~motif~ of V’s revolution. The 1812 Overture is a motif because it’s been like the main music of the film since it’s about Guy Fawkes and all.

And finally, lighting: During most of this scene, it’s pretty dark, which shows us how desperate everyone is for this revolution. It’s a pretty bleak situation let’s be real here. But when parliament actually explodes, everyone’s faces are illuminated, just like their spirits are, in the light of the fireworks. Also it’s as if it’s the dawn of a new, brighter era. Speaking of fireworks, they’re real pretty.
