Developing the Long Term NHS Plan and the Health and Care Workforce Strategy Giles Denham Director of Strategic Relationships Health education England 4 October 2018 C

The NHS Long Term Plan (LTP) On 18th June the Prime Minister set out a funding settlement for the NHS in England for the next five years. In return, the NHS has been asked to set out a long term plan for the future of the NHS by Autumn, setting out our ambitions for improvement over the next decade, and our plans to meet them over the five years of the funding settlement. Working groups have being established, bringing together local and national system leaders, partners and stakeholders, to shape the final plan. One of these groups focuses on workforce, although others are thinking about relevant staffing needs for their ideas. 4 October 2018

The LTP workforce ask Taking account of existing trends and proposals for inclusion in the Long Term Plan, what is the size and shape of the workforce that we need by 2029? What radical options do we have for improving and supporting our workforce? How are we supporting staff to deliver the changes we are asking for and to ensure the NHS is a high quality employer? 4 October 2018

The draft Health and Care Workforce Strategy Responses Jan-March 2018: 1,185 participated in the online workshop, including 143 organisations Feedback captured from 32 events across the country 195 organisations also submitted responses directly

Key messages Good support for the six principles Consensus across the workforce, but some issues for specific professional groups highlighted by organisations Clear emerging priorities to address in the national strategy, but experiences of local working cultures also matter

Emerging Priorities – 1.Attracting people Address public perceptions of careers in health and care Introduce new qualifications and routes to employment Ensure roles allow for future development Protect funding for health services Promote careers through school outreach

Emerging Priorities – 2. Modern, model employers Protect time and funding for CPD and other development activities Enable health and care organisations to support flexible working Ensure staff are paid fairly Create opportunities through apprenticeships
