XVth International Workshop on Neutrino Factories, Betabeams and Superbeams LAGUNA-LBNO Many thanks to D. Duchesneau, F. Di Lodovico, T. Patzak, A. Rubbia and many LBNO collaborators

2. LAGUNA-LBNO = …-Long Baseline Neutrino Observatory Ongoing study! INTRODUCTION 1. LAGUNA = Large Apparatus for Grand Unification and NeutrinoAstrophysics -- FP7 design study 2008-2011 ~100 members; 10 countries -- 3 detector technologies: (L. Argon, L. Scintillator, Water Cherenkov) -- 7 sites with different baselines from CERN (130 → 2300km) -- focus on site qualities and physics studies, no detector R&D, no beam study -- concluded with down-selection on 3 sites (Frejus, Pyhasalmi, Umbria) good mines technically + good baselines for SPL superbeam and Neutrino Factory resp. 2. LAGUNA-LBNO = …-Long Baseline Neutrino Observatory Ongoing study! -- FP7 design study 2011-2014 ~300 members; 14 countries + CERN -- includes beam (and ND) study, still no detector R&D but ND and MIND added -- deliverable is full experimental proposal (with cost) in 2014 -- 1st priority = 2300km experiment (C2PY) and 130km MEMPHYS as 2d priority 3. LENA = Low Energy Neutrino Astrophysics “Whitepaper”, March 2012) -- Focused at low energy (MeV) region, with GeV physics complementary to LBNO -- specific proposal ~80 authors; 36 institutions 4. LBNO experiment expression of interest. (not a proposal yet!) -- includes members beyond FP7 D.S. – ~230 authors; 51 institutions -- CERN-SPSC-2012-021 ; SPSC-EOI-007, under review -- highest priority recommendation by EU neutrino community for ESPP’13

Concentrate on CN2PY in the following

LAGUNA-LBNO – SITE INVESTIGATIONS

LBNO PHYSICS AIMS:

Channel count and prelim Channel count and prelim. costing indicates significant economical gains (fact 2-3?) w.r.t. wire readout

Cosmic track in double phase 80x40cm2 LAr-LEM TPC with adjustable gain: S/N > 100 for mip.

Size required for containment of had. showers CERN seems committed to provide support for these important developments Also test of MIND/TASD prototype in beam (AIDA)

A. Blondel NUFACT13 IHEP Beijing 20 August 2013

Selected Physics output: No selection/anti-selection of tau signal/background attempted so far. next: let the neural nets get to work !

Mass Hierarchy Determination: -- things can go wrong or funny when relying on combination of 2-4 sigma expts. A single 5 sigma experiment is needed to make definite observation. 20kton @SPS:

Zooming on «parametric» systematic errors As expected 13 dominates

CP Zooming on detection-related systematics As expected e dominates! CP Emphasizes once more the importance to know cross-section x efficiency for the e (in far detector) /  (in near detector)

Conclusions The LAGUNA-LBNO design study is progressing well on several fronts -- Design of the far detector infrastructure -- beam line design and physics studies The experiment proposes a detailed and rich study of neutrino oscillations over a full oscillation length, with a WB superbeam, including -- CC e ,  appearance, CC  disappearance and NC disappearance The chosen Larg technology needs demo, but opens potential for large masses -- allows event energy/momentum reconstruction (needs test beam calib!) -- a 6X6X6 m3 demonstrator proposal is in preparation A strong emphasis is placed on near detector design. The systematic errors on appearance channel cross-section are important and argue in favor of a synergy with nuSTORM An EOI for LBNO experiment was submitted by a 250-strong collaboration in 2012. SPSC has replied positively with lots of questions! However response from Finland was not positive in Xmas 2012, alternatives are being sought. Discussions will be reopened when appropriate
