Scientific Models: Introduction to Models of the Earth Original Material by T. Brown 2005

Scientific Models: Using other things to represent real things in the real world. Does not need to look like the real thing being studied, just act like it in one important way. No model is perfect.

Scientific Models: Uh Oh! We use Models to Study Things that are… Too Big / Small Too Expensive Too Dangerous Impractical / Unethical Too Far Away … to study directly. Uh Oh! Original Material by T. Brown 2005 Original Material by T. Brown 2005

Scientific Models: Examples: Globes / Maps Crater Lab Animals for Medical Experiments Computer Models Weather Climate Medical Chemistry Original Material by T. Brown 2005

Define Map: Maps are Flat Pictures of the Earth. All Maps are distorted, because you can’t make a sphere flat without stretching or shrinking it. Original Material by T. Brown 2005

A sphere can not be made flat without distorting it.. Original Material by T. Brown 2005

A 3-D Spherical map of the Earth. Globes: A 3-D Spherical map of the Earth. It is the most accurate. Original Material by T. Brown 2005

This is an example of a study card. Elevation: height of a point on Earth above or below sea level. 10 ft Above Sea Level This is an example of a study card. Original Material by T. Brown 2005

Practice: Find a flat dry area. Identify all symbols on a map. Pick any contour line, and determine the elevation at that point. Tell me which way streams and rivers flow. Where is a steep cliff like area. Where is a benchmark. If the river floods 10 ft above normal, where would it spread out to? Determine a route for a 2 mile road race ( or longer) in a certain area. Find a hill. Determine all the streams flowing into and out of a wetland. Find open space to create a new park in Wethersfield. Original Material by T. Brown 2005
