BACKGROUND The Hunchback of Notre Dame By Victor Hugo Published in 1831 The story is set in 1400’s

Definitions Theme – an idea or concept that is central to a story. It can often be summed in a single word. Plot – the events that make up a story Sanctuary – a sacred place that gives protection to those fleeing from justice or persecution Duality – opposing elements Protagonist – the central character, often overcomes a flaw or weakness by the end Antagonist – opposes the protagonist, usually the villain

Concepts Sanctuary How is sanctuary also like a prison? How did sanctuary protect and not protect Esmeralda? Setting Why is the cathedral significant? How is it an example of duality?

Themes Outsiders – people who do not fit in society, outcasts Justice – fair and just treatment, upholding the law Injustice – a violation of what is right and fair Love – What are characteristics of Frollo & Quasimodo’s love for Esmeralda? Loyalty – unswerving allegiance, devotion, and faithfulness Duality – opposing elements Examples: Love and Hate, Good and Evil, Life and Death, Beauty and Grotesque
