1970s Rock and Roll

1970s ROCK Counterculture ended. Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison all died in 1970-71 from drug overdoses. The Beatles broke up in 1970. Rock and roll split into many categories. Many bands went back and forth between the different categories. The 1970s was the end of the counterculture for rock. Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin both overdosed in 1970. Jim Morrison of the Doors died in 1971. The Beatles split in 1970 as well.

Roots Rock Bands who wanted to move away from the psychedelic music to a more basic, original form. Blended folk and country, creating Southern rock and country rock.

Soft Rock Soft rock- derived from folk rock, used acoustic instruments, and put more emphasis on melody and harmonies. Soft rock came out of folk music. Black Sabbath was a group from England whose most famous member was Ozzy Osbourne. They were pioneers of heavy metal. They were one of the first bands to incorporate ‘darkness’ into their lyrics. Lyrics were horror-inspired and filled with references to the occult. Their guitars were tuned down creating a deeper sound that made a signature dark sound to their songs. Black Sabbath sold over 15 million records in the US and over 70 million worldwide. Ozzy was kicked out of the band but went on to have a successful solo career.
