Title of notes: Population change pg. 15 RS

Determined by births + deaths and immigration + emigration. Population change Determined by births + deaths and immigration + emigration.

Who studies population changes? Population ecologists (They study the structure and dynamics of populations.)

When more individuals enter the population than leave it. Increases + When more individuals enter the population than leave it. Death rates are less than birth rates.

Decreases - When more individuals leave the population than enter it. Death rates are greater than birth rates.

The individuals entering from outside a given area. Immigration The individuals entering from outside a given area.

The individuals leaving a given area. Emigration The individuals leaving a given area.

A seasonal movement in/out of an area. Migration A seasonal movement in/out of an area.

Pg. 112 Immigration, emigration, migration Reading Pg. 112 Immigration, emigration, migration

Birth/death rate Take birth or death rate and x 1,000

Practice – On left side Number 1 Take birth or death rate and x 1,000 # births: 3,250 Population: 223,000

Answer #1: Practice – On left side # births: 3,250 Population: 223,000 3,250 / 223,000 = 0.01457399 0.01457399 x 1000 = 14.57% or 14.6%

Practice – On left side Number 2 Take birth or death rate and x 1,000 # deaths: 2,560 Population: 279,000

Answer #2: Practice – On left side # deaths: 2,560 Population: 279,000 2,560 / 279,000 = 0.00917563 0.00917563 x 1,000 = 9.17% or 9.2%

practice – On left side Number 3 Take birth or death rate and x 1,000 # births: 3,250 Population: 125,625

Answer #3: Practice – On left side # deaths: 3,250 Population: 125,625 3,250 / 125,625 = 0.02587065 0.02587065 x 1,000 = 25.87% or 25.9%

Real data activity We will read the introduction about turkey vultures and answer questions 1-4.

(Use the terms birth, death, immigration, emigration) Pg. 112 Increases – Jumps – Decreases – 2. Increasing – Decreasing – 3. Arrive – Leave – 4. One source of error: Left side! (Give me the month) (Use the terms birth, death, immigration, emigration)
