Cool stuff: Stonewall Jackson got his nickname from this battle First time the “rebel yell” was experienced and used People from Washington DC (senators and congressmen included) came to watch the battle on horseback or in carriages. They also brought picnic baskets. As Union troops retreated and Confederate artillery shells got closer, the spectators realized war was dangerous and added to the confusion as they tried to escape.
