Ecosystems and Biomes Chapter 23 Section One

Energy Flow in Ecosystems Energy Roles Producer Consumer Decomposer

Producers Organism that can make its own food is called a producer. Examples: Plants, Algae, and Bacteria

Consumer Organisms that obtain energy by feeding on other organisms.

Consumers are classified in three categories!!!! Herbivores Carnivores Omnivores Eat only plants Eat only animals Eats both plants and animals

Scavengers Some carnivores that feed on the bodies of dead organisms are called Scavengers.

Decomposers Organisms that break down wastes and dead organisms and return the raw materials to the environment.

Food Chains and Food Webs The movement of energy through an ecosystem can be shown in diagrams called food chains and food webs.

Food Chain or Food Web

Energy Pyramids A diagram that shows the amount of energy that moves from one feeding level to another in a food web.

Energy Pyramids The most energy is available at the producer level. At each level in the pyramid, there is less available energy than at the level below.

Energy Energy Third Level Consumers Second Level Consumers Producers First Level Consumers Energy
