Lines, Lines, Lines!!! ~ Slopes They Rise… …They Fall & They Stay Constant!

Where are Slopes Often Found?

What is a Slope? The Rise or Fall of a Line The negative or positive inclination of a line The Change of ‘y’ over the change of ‘x’ The ratio of vertical change to horizontal change.

Positive and Negative Slopes

Zero and Undefined Slopes

In Mathematics You will see Slopes being Defined in the following ways

What does it mean? Positive numbers moves Up and to the Right Negative numbers moves Down and to the Left

How many points are needed to draw a line? One? Two? Three?

Find the slope of A(-2, -2) and B(3, 4)

Find the slope of A(-2, -2) and B(3, 4)

Graph (3,3) and (-1,-2) Remember to click to make each part appear

Draw a line through the points. Line will appear automatically

Now that we have our line lets find its slope. Remember we are finding the following ratio: Vertical or Rise Horizontal Run

Vertical Change or the Rise 5 Discuss vertical change

Horizontal Change or the Run 4 5 Discuss horizontal change

Vertical Rise Horizontal Run 5 4 May need to remind students that a ratio is a comparison of two numbers

Find the slope of the line.

The slope is…. 3 2 Discuss why the slope is negative and that –3/1 reduces to –3.

Find the slope of these lines. Have students practice.

The slope is… Yellow Line 3 Red Line 1 Blue Line -1/2

Now you draw a line. Given: slope is 2/3 and the point is (1,0)

The graphs are…

Student Activity You will now receive a worksheet. Turn the worksheet in when completed.
