Industrial Revolution Industrial Revolution- shift from farming to factories (machines) Quantity (many) over quality Industrial Revolution starts in England in 1780's because of - improved farming methods lower food prices - people have extra money to buy things - England has money to invest in machinery

Industrial Revolution Urbanization- movement of people from country to the city James Watt improves the steam engine, allows for mass production also helps travel (makes world seem smaller) Railroads and canals (steamboats) are developed to transport goods causing economic growth Factory labor system- repetitive work, work in shifts

Industrial Revolution Factory conditions- low pay, unsafe, unventilated, poor lighting Industrial Revolution spreads across Europe and also U.S. Capitalism- economic system based on private property and free enterprise Rise of the middle class- middle class male property owners (and renters) given voting rights (suffrage)

Industrial Revolution Socialism- government controls and owns some means of production Work conditions: - no minimum wage - no job security - 12-16 hours a day, 6 days a week Women paid half as much as men (or less) children paid only 1/3 (or less) than men

Industrial Revolution Factory Act of 1833 (England)- sets minimal age of work at 9. Children age 9-13 can only work 9 hours a day. Materialism- belief that the possession of objects leads to happiness
