Eco Fact of the Week Similar to many of you, I require a cup of coffee every morning, but the amount of waste that results from using a coffee machine is astounding! In 2013, the number of coffee pods sold for Keurig Coffee machines could circle the Earth 10.5 times! Several notable coffee industry officials, including the Keurig inventor and Nespresso CEO,  conceded coffee pods are not biodegradable and are left in landfills for 150 to 200 years without degrading. Furthermore, these concerns exclude the environmental costs of manufacturing billions of plastic pods. However, this issue can be resolved. Nespresso owners can return used pods to the company via recycling bags with prepaid postage. Keurig owners can purchase Recyclable K-Cup Pods instead of their non-recyclable counterparts. Alternatively, those who use coffee grounds can repurpose their waste to fertilize gardens or for many other purposes.

Recognition and Congratulations!

The Daily Course Calendar was last updated on August 24 Are you reading?

Today’s Class— please have your vocabulary logs on your desks What is philosophy? The rational investigation of the truths and principles of being, knowledge, or conduct. Any of the three branches, namely natural philosophy, moral philosophy, and metaphysical philosophy, that are accepted as composing this study. A particular system of thought based on such study or investigation: the philosophy of Spinoza. The critical study of the basic principles and concepts of a particular branch of knowledge, especially with a view to improving or reconstituting them: the philosophy of science. A system of principles for guidance in practical affairs. An attitude of rationality, patience, composure, and calm in the presence of troubles or annoyances.

Plato’s “The Allegory of the Cave” Read, annotate; read, annotate; read, annotate. Research—be curious, look for analysis and criticism on the web Zero in on major ideas and claims Construct questions about the text

Rhetoric Rhetoric: Close Reading: Rhetorical Analysis: The traditional definition of rhetoric, first proposed by Aristotle, and embellished over the centuries by scholars and teachers, is that rhetoric is the art of observing in any given case the “available means of persuasion.” Close Reading: Reading to “develop an understanding of a text that is based first on the words themselves and then on the larger ideas those words suggest.” Rhetorical Analysis: Defining an author’s purpose, then identifying and analyzing the techniques and strategies employed to achieve that purpose.
