Geography Geography: the study of the earth

Location Absolute Location: describing a place’s exact position on Earth Measured using degrees Latitude/Longitude Example: 30°S, 113°W Relative Location: describing a place’s location by describing places around it We live in Lyons, about 13 miles West of Chicago

Place What does the land look like? What kind of people live there? Place: Includes a location’s physical and human features Physical Features What does the land look like? Human Features (city, country, suburbs) What kind of people live there?

Human-Environment Interaction How do we impact the world we live in? Houses Trails, roads Dams Reservoirs (ponds) Deforestation

Movement How people, goods, and ideas get from one place to another Mingling cultures Patterns of movement (highways, trains)

Regions Regions: physical and cultural characteristics that make places alike and different What are the characteristics of the area? What does Illinois look like? Flat, farmland, green What does Florida look like? Flat, swampy, beaches, hot What does Arizona look like? Mountains, dry, desert
