Ask These Questions Why am I writing? What results do I need from this message?

Why? People receive so many messages each day Careless e-mails do not elicit careful responses Messages must be well organized Messages must be brief Readers may be using portable devices Who has a lot of time to waste?

Write a Meaningful Subject Line Write from the recipient’s point of view What does he/she need to know? Make it capture the most important points Keep it seven words or less

Organize It! Include the topic in the first sentence Describe what this is about State what response or action you need Clearly express when you need it Limit your text to one screen If you have too much info, use separate messages

Keep It Short Keep It Meaningful
