Chapter 9: Water Moving Underground More than 97 percent of all water on Earth is in the ocean as salt water. Glaciers – of the little amount of fresh.

Aim: How does water move through the ground?
Groundwater. Groundwater is water that completely fills (saturates) the pore spaces of soil or rock formation below the water table. Water that shares.

Groundwater Where does the water go?

Runoff Water that does not soak into the ground or evaporate, but flows across the Earth’s surface.

Factors Affecting Runoff: Amount of rain Length of time that rain falls Steepness of land Vegetation

Groundwater Water that soaks into the ground collects in pores and empty space between sediment particles. Approximately 14% of all fresh water is groundwater.

Permeable vs. Impermeable Permeable has connected pores and space for water to flow underground. Impermeable pores or spaces are not connect and do not allow water to flow.

Groundwater movement Aquifer- a layer of permeable sediment that allows water to flow freely. Area that completely saturated with water is the water table.

Ground Water Ground water includes: Wells, Springs, and Geysers Permeable Zone of Saturation Impermeable Ground water includes: Wells, Springs, and Geysers
