Paraguay

Paraguay está en Sudamérica 2-3% of the Paraguayan population live in the western part of the country. Separated by the Paraguay River, 97% of the population lives in the eastern part of the country. paraguayo(a)

La capital de Paraguay es Asunción Clockwise - Capital city, Palacio de gobierno, LDS (Mormon Latter Day Saints) temple, people on the streets, on the streets

Iguazu Falls The World’s Longest Falls - Iguazu Falls is on the border of 2 countries - Brazil and Argentina - and close to the border of Paraguay. Taller than Niagara Falls, twice as wide with 275 cascades spread in a horsehoe shape over nearly two miles of the Iguazu River, Iguazú Falls are the result of a volcanic eruption which left yet another large crack in the earth. There is a huge Itaipu hydroelectric power plant that was built jointly by Paraguay and Brazil. It was completed in 1991 and the dam is open to tours and provides 12,600,000 KW of power satisfying almost 40% of Brazil and Argentine power needs.

Empanadas A stuffed bread or pastry that is fried or baked with a variety of fillings. They can contain meat like ground beef or chicken, vegetables, cheese, rice and beans or they could be sweet, filled with fruit. These are also very popular in Argentina as well.

Sopa paraguaya The country’s national dish is called paraguayan soup but it is not a soup at all. It is more like a cheesy cornbread. Legend has it that Carlos Antonio Lopez, president-cum-dictator of Paraguay from 1841 to 1862, decided one day to feast upon a nice warming bowl of corn soup. His cook accidentally put too much corn flour in the soup, and what came out was a solid rather than a liquid. Luckily for the cook, Lopez liked it and began the tradition of paraguay soup.

War of the Triple Alliance Paraguay lost 66-70% of the adult males in their country as well as a lot of their territory when they lost in the War of the Triple Alliance. The triple alliance was Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay that waged war against Paraguay from 1865-1870. The origins of the war were likely disputes over territory/borders. The War of the Triple Alliance (the triple alliance was Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay) took place from 1865 to 1870 where Paraguay lost 66% of the adult males and a lot of the territory.

Guaraní people and language Guaraní is the official national language of Paraguay, along with Spanish. It is the dominant language in rural areas and lower social classes, but nearly half the population speaks both Guaraní and Spanish in the home. Guaraní people, however, have been losing their land (in Brasil) and now live mainly in rural, forested areas. Guaraní video “Guaraní” is used as a nickname for a Paraguayan (like “Boricua’ for a Puerto Rican) and is the name of the Paraguayan currency. The majority of the people speak an indigenous language, although they do not self-identify ethnically as indigenous. Guarani, a Tupi Guarani language and the language of eastern Paraguay's dominant precolonial indigenous population, is recognized as an official national language along with Spanish. Spanish is the language of business and government, and Guarani is spoken in everyday life. According to the 1992 census, nearly half the population speaks both Guarani and Spanish in the home and 39 percent speaks only Guarani. In rural areas and among the lower social classes, Guarani is the dominant language. Although most schooling is conducted in Spanish, children are required to study Guarani as well. There is considerable lexical borrowing and linguistic code switching in informal conversation. Read more:http://www.everyculture.com/No-Sa/Paraguay.html#ixzz41HlZeIYw
