11/20/08 BR- What Egyptian Art Rules are represented in this picture? Today: Egyptian Art

It is important to understand that Egyptian art was creative but artists operated under certain rules that had to be obeyed. In chapter 21 many of these rules are discussed. (in a picture, important people must always be large for example.)

Activity: Egyptian Art Textbook Create an Egyptian art textbook. This book explains important rules that must be followed if your are going to create a piece of art. Come up with 5 rules Make a book (5 pages and a cover.) Each page deals with one rule. Explain the rule AND draw an example of it (or get one from the internet)

1. Frontalism: Any picture that is drawn must show the head in profile but the rest of the body as if you were seeing from the front.

2. The Golden Ratio – (phi) drawings must conform to the sacred ratio of 1.6180339 (the ratio that occurs naturally in all things)
