To be able to explain the role of the Medieval Church. Learning Objective To be able to explain the role of the Medieval Church. By the end of this lesson... ALL OF US will be able to describe some of the things a Priest would do in a Medieval Village. (3B-3A) EVEN BETTER IF you can describe his role in greater detail. (4C-4A) EXCELLENT IF you can explain the sort of qualities you would require to become a Medieval Priest (5C-5B). CHALLENGE!!! WHAT WAS THE MOST IMPORTYANT ROLE OF A VILLAGE PRIEST? (5A-6B)

Key Words Mass: Important church service. Parish: The local area, run by the church and its Priest. 5

The priest Nearly every town and village had a church which the local people had helped to build. Every Sunday they went there to attend mass. The Parish Priest was usually the only person in the village who could read and write. During Church services he would read from the Bible, which was written in Latin.

Task The Parish Priest was usually the most important person in the village. He would tend to the sick, help out the poor, and try to get people out of trouble with the Law. He would also marry men and women, listen to confessions and carry out funerals. They were responsible for taking money for the Church as well! He was at the centre of everything! 15 Instructions: Draw a spider diagram on a whole page. In the middle put ‘The Parish Priest’. Write down all of the things he did. I can think of 8. Then, draw a picture to go with each bit of writing.

Why would someone want to join the Church? In groups of four, read the different information on what the priest did, and write down three key points in your book about that role. When the timer is up, change information with a different group.

You have ten minutes to teach your peers and learn what they know! Group work Split into four groups. You have three minutes to become an expert on this role and prepare to teach your peers about it. 3 minutes Now send one of your group members to each of the other groups to teach them what they have learned. You have ten minutes to teach your peers and learn what they know! http://www.online-stopwatch.com/ - 12 mins total 10 minutes

The local Church has placed an advertisement on the Church door. Write a letter explaining why you think you would be a suitable person for the job. Wanted! Hints: What sort of jobs did the Priest do? What sort of things would you need to be good at to do them? Why would you be better than someone else? 15 CHALLENGE!!! WHAT WAS THE MOST IMPORTYANT ROLE OF A VILLAGE PRIEST? (5A-6B)
