Exploring The Ocean Floor By: Joshua Morales, Maria Barrera, Adan Hernandez

Vocabulary Seamounts- submerged volcanic mountains on the ocean floor that are at least 1,000 meters high. Continental Slope- sea ward edge of a continental shelf is sleeper slope. Submarine canyon- deep v-shape valley. Turbidity Currents- these canyons are associated with mass of major river where other canyons may be carried. Continental rise- sediments from raised wedge at the base of the continental slope. Trenches- deep valley in the ocean floor. Abyssal plain- extremely level area of the deep ocean basin where the depth is often greater than 4 km.

Tools to explore the ocean Bathyscaph- a self propelled, free moving equipped for the deep ocean research. Sonar- S0und Navigation And Ranging. Echo sounders- different frequencies of sound to find out different things about the sea floor.

Creatures of the deep. Viper fish-Some viperfish are "see through". They also have enlarged eyes, presumably for gathering as much light as possible where there is little or no light at all. The light organs create lights by using a chemical process called bioluminescence They look wired because they must get use to there habitat.

Water Zones

Food in ocean floor. Basically big fish eats the small fish. A big fish eats a small fish who probably ate small creatures or one celled life.

Mariana Trench The Mariana trench is located in the western pacific ocean. It is near the island Quam. It is know sometimes to be the deepest part of the ocean.

Questions What is sonar? Devise that finds health fish to eat. Acronym for sound navigation and ranging. Continental shelf is: edge of a continent covered by shallow ocean water. True False What is the abyssal plain? Benthic environment that extends from beneath the bathyal zone to a depth of 6,000m Extremely level area of the deep ocean basin where the depth is often greater than 4km Where is the Mariana trench located? The pond in front of Schurz high school Western pacific ocean near the island Guam.
