Reading Math How You Can Help At Home Science Writing Bible More Information About our Learning: *Students will be doing their guided reading placements in the next two weeks. *We are building our collaborative classroom environment. Students are learning how to do the rotations and are practicing different reading and writing skills in the process. How You Can Help At Home *Encourage the use of our vocabulary words (on the front page) so that students can learn how to use them in their daily language. *Visit a library or a bookstore so students can get something new to read. Math How You Can Help At Home More Information About our Learning: *Students are working on place value in our math unit. They will focus on ones, tens, and hundreds. Students who are ready will work on bigger numbers and rounding to the tens or hundreds place. How You Can Help At Home *Have students practice telling the difference between odd and even numbers. *Practice doubles facts such as 16=8+8 and 8+8=16. They should know that the number sentence can have the sum (answer) at the beginning or the end. We are learning that the equals sign tells us that both sides of the equation are the same. *Practice putting sets of three or more numbers in order. Practice using language such as “greater than, less than” or “equal to” when comparing just two numbers. Science Writing Bible About our Learning: About our Learning: We have been learning about creation. We learned that God created plants on day three and that, since we needed oxygen to breathe, the plants were put in place before us. Next, we learned about day four. God created the sun, moon, and stars on that day. He created them to give us light and warmth. How You Can Help: *Practice their memory verse daily. *Talk about the story of creation and the power of God. About our Learning : Our first science unit will be all about healthy living. This will also be our first project based learning unit! How You Can Help: *As you eat, have your child tell you which food groups they are eating. *Talk to your child about healthy vs. not healthy foods. *Get exercise (swim, bike, walk/run, play sports, etc.) as a family and talk about the benefits of exercise on the body, mind, and spirit. Students published their first piece of writing, a survival guide for second grade. Please be aware that even though we did go through the whole writing process (brainstorm, writing, editing, revising, and publishing) you may still see invented spelling in some cases. This is age appropriate. Our editing this round focused on capitals and periods. We cannot tackle all editing issues at this age level. There will be times when our editing focuses more on the spelling portion. How You Can Help: As your child writes, have them focus on complete sentences, capitals, and periods.

Please return this top portion. Thanks! We are looking for some experts to come in to talk to our students about health. I know that some of you may be a great resource or may be in contact with someone who would be. Please take a look at the list below and let me know if you can help us by coming in yourself, or by finding an expert that could come in. ____Nutritionist/dietitian ____Pediatrician ____Dentist ____Personal Trainer or Aerobics Instructor ____Psychiatrist ____I can come in to speak with the class. Contact me to arrange a time. ____ I know someone who is willing to come in and speak with the class. Contact me to arrange that. Name: _________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ We will start working on the Lord’s Prayer. In about a month, that will be our memory verse. Since it is longer than usual, I would suggest having your child practice it during prayers or any other time throughout the day. You can even check out the song by Steve Green on YouTube. Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors and do not lead us into temptation. But deliver us from the evil one, for Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Matthew 9:6-13
