LT 7.6: Use Proportional Relationships to Solve Problems

Math Humor Q: How many seconds are there in a year? A: Twelve. January 2nd, February 2nd, etc.

Vocabulary Indirect measurement is any method that uses formulas, similar figures, and/or proportions to measure an object. Scale drawing is a drawing that uses a scale to represent an object as smaller or larger than the actual object. Scale is the ratio between two corresponding measurements.

Example 1: Tyler wants to find the height of a telephone pole. He measured the pole’s shadow and his own shadow and then made a diagram. What is the height h of the pole?

Example 2: The rectangular central chamber of the Lincoln Memorial is 74 ft long and 60 ft wide. Make a scale drawing of the floor of the chamber using a scale of 1 in.:20 ft. 3.7 in x 3 in

Example 3:   122A = (4)2(96)
