CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT November 7, 2016

Concurrent Enrollment – What Is It? High school students enrolled in college courses May earn high school credit and/or college credit Enrollment fee waived by California Community College Board of Governors What is dual enrollment? Concurrent enrollment, but college classes are taught by high school faculty and/or offered on the high school campus

Concurrent Enrollment – Why Do It? Expand curriculum options for HS students Gain exposure to college environment/system/style Be career-ready when finished with HS Save money on college courses Save time earning college degree Earn both college and high school credit for same work Possible bump in GPA Increase likelihood of matriculation to college after HS

Concurrent Enrollment – Why NOT? College culture vs. HS culture NOT THE SAME College transcripts & grades are PERMANENT Online classes are more TIME CONSUMING Online classes require DISCIPLINE & MOTIVATION College classes may impact HS PERFORMANCE College textbooks are EXPENSIVE If you drop a college class, you may not be able to get into a HS class for that term – impacting your schedule Earning below a ‘C’ may impact credit toward HS courses (A-G requirements)

Concurrent Enrollment – For Whom? College Bound HS Student Increase GPA Demonstrate college readiness General education courses can be taken with no fee Free up college schedule for more courses in major or electives Save money on college tuition Graduate from college early

Concurrent Enrollment – For Whom? Students Entering Workforce after HS Graduation Complete or earn credit toward job certification Develop skills for employment Career Fields Child Development Web Professional Paralegal Clinical/Administrative Medical Assisting Business Computer Information Systems Management

Concurrent Enrollment – For Whom? Students Undecided About College Exposure to college courses with No cost High support Credit in HS May increase HS GPA Explore various interests

Know WHY Concurrent Enrollment Your long-term plan will determine the courses you should take Career Technical Courses CSU/UC/UNR Transferable CSU/UC/UNR Major HS Electives & A-G Requirements Risks may outweigh benefits Impact on HS grades In-seat versus Online classes may impact experience and learning Impact on College GPA / Transcript College Student Conduct Standards Cost of books Access Codes may be problematic Unhappy experience…

Concurrent Enrollment SUPPORT Use your SUPPORT TEAM Classmates Study Groups vs. Individual Work College faculty Communicate frequently with college faculty HS teachers and counselors Keep apprised of your progress Assist you with navigating college environment College learning resource center Regular communications Let us know any issues early Parents

Concurrent Enrollment SUPPORT RECOMMENDATIONS Purchase Books and Materials EARLY Check your Cerro Coso Email REGULARLY Log In on First Day and DAILY during the semester Read/Understand Student Conduct Policy Print Syllabus Introduce yourself to College Faculty Calendar all Assignments Spend an HOUR each day on College Course Check in WEEKLY with HS Teachers and Parents Work with College LRC regularly Study with your Classmates; Submit individual work Communicate problems, concerns, questions IMMEDIATELY DO NOT FALL BEHIND!

Becoming a Successful Online Student Take PDEV C052 – Becoming a Successful Online Student BEFORE enrolling in any other online courses Take one course at a time until comfortable with college online courses Work with counselor to choose appropriate courses Avoid summer online courses Half the time Less structure and support More distractions Understand why and when to drop or withdraw from a course

Why & When to Drop a College Class What? Why? Refund Date ~ 10% (2 weeks) Last day to drop a class and qualify for a refund. Does not apply to HS students who do not pay tuition fees. No entry on permanent records. Decided not to take the class and want a refund. Census Date ~ 12% (2.5 weeks) Last day to drop a class without entry on permanent records. Decided not to take the class and do not want any record of withdrawing from the class. Final Drop Date ~ 35% (6 weeks) Last day to withdraw from a full term class with a “W”. A “W” will appear on permanent records. Earning a D or F in the class and unlikely to increase grade by end of semester. After Final Drop Date Student will receive grade earned in class. Grade will appear on permanent records. Did not drop or withdraw in time. Was not aware of progress in class. *Important to check exact drop dates for each class. Percent of semester and weeks into semester are approximations only for full term classes. Note that dropping classes may impact HS progress.

What are the Implications of a “W”? “W” may impact High School progress May need course for A-G or other requirements May not be able to get into a ‘replacement’ high school course “W” is an official college record Remain on a college transcript Cannot be removed even if the course is completed in future Not used to calculate GPA Considered an ‘attempt’; students can only attempt courses twice “W” as indicator of CCCC academic progress Excessive “W”s can be a factor in possible academic probation Enrollment after earning a “W” will require HS students to discuss with college and HS counselors jointly Students earning two “W”s or a non-passing grade in a concurrent course will not be able to enroll in any further courses “W” on future college admissions No hard or fast rules May be a factor for highly selective colleges and universities

Next Steps Meet with HS Counselor to determine if Concurrent Enrollment is a good option for student & what student goals are Complete CCCC Admissions/Update form Work with HS Counselor and/or CCCC Counselor to select Concurrent Enrollment course for next semester Complete Concurrent Enrollment form Check InsideCC to confirm you are enrolled in the correct course Purchase Text Books Log In prior to First Day
