Question of the Month September-October

Introduction of purpose of QoM Have 4000 face to face conversations with students Ask one important question each month at all campus’ Engage with students Gain student voice Create awareness of Brighton Students’ Union & Students’ Voice Understand measures to improve student university Improve Students’ Union strategies/projects This was asked at Freshers fairs around all campus’

Highlights 72% 1st year students know they are members of the BSU 33% of third year students questioned did not know they are members of the student union 55% of students that responded to the survey at the International & PGCE fairs did not know they were members of the BSU. 80% of students knew that they were members of the BSU Questions were answered generally in a concise fashion to an open question

What this tells us Questions need to be in a more open styled format International students need more information on understanding who the BSU is and what we can do for them. Information regarding more inclusion to the students labelling about them being automatic members. During Freshers week welcome talks do not gain all students attention with some of them perhaps not turning up, and not reading all information from the pack sent in the post before starting.

What we are going to do? Welcome talks for all years students – reinforcing their membership and making them aware of all the BSU provides and how this can help them. This includes roles within BSU. Re-evaluate the format of questioning. Use sociological concepts to induce a greater qualitative aspect of the surveys. Posters, emails, social media etc. aimed at letting students understand that they are members of the BSU and how we are here to help them. A focus on international students/postgraduate students.
