Presentation transcript:

Other Issues of Segregation Gendered Place – whether a place is designed for or claimed by men or women Created by the construction or the use What are some examples of places designed for or used exclusively for men or women?

Other issues of Segregation SEXUALITY AND SPACE: Acceptable Sexuality = Social Construction Use of Heteronormative Concepts: describe any of a set of lifestyle norms that hold that people fall into distinct, complementary, and naturual genders It also holds that heterosexuality is the normal sexual orientation, and states that sexual and marital relations are most (or only) fitting between a man and a woman.

QUEER THEORY Theory defined by geographers Glen Elder, Lawrence Knopp, and Heidi Nast Highlights the contextual nature of opposition to the heteronormative focuses on the political engagement of gays with the heteronormative

Subjugation and Cultural Constructions Power Relationships (1) assumptions and structures about who is in control (2) reflected in the cultural landscape … power structure over how the landscape should be seen (3) subjugate entire groups to the will of the “controlling groups” What are five power relationships that the United States has experienced through history?

Subjugation Groups to Understand (1) Protestants v. Catholics in Northern Ireland (2) Degradation of Informal Economic Activity of Women in Multiple Societies (3) Inequity in Power Relationships between Men and Women in Sub-Saharan Africa despite Population Numbers (4) Dowry Deaths in India

Shifting of Power Amongst Ethnic Groups Seems very similar to sequent occupancy and invasion and succession Barrioization: defined by geographer James Curtis The dramatic increase in Hispanic population in a given neighborhood Refers to Spanish word for neighborhood… barrio Growing population in Baltimore
